Geoff Dyer

As always Kapittel presents a strong programme in English. This year's main festival theme is The body.

Marlene van Niekerk, Geoff Dyer and Isabella Hammad are among the English speaking guests at this year's festival. There are also several documentaries in English (or with English subtitles) in the filmprogramme.

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 18TH

ISTANBUL ISTANBUL
The award-winning Turkish writer Burhan Sönmez is publishing the Norwegian translation of his third novel Istanbul Istanbul. Sönmez, himself a former political prisoner, will meet ICORN’s Elisabeth Dyvik in this talk about literature’s force in the face of torture

FROM CIRCUMCISION TO FREEDOM
Latifa Anda is a Somali-Norwegian entrepreneur and businesswoman. She will give a talk about her long journey from circumcision to freedom. In collaboration with Norwegian PEN.

THE POETESS (2017) 
Director: Stefanie Brockhaus, Andreas Wolff. A Saudi-Arabian woman  participates in “Million’s Poet”, the largest Arabic poetry-competition - the Arab poetry-version of Idol. Arabic, English subtitles. 88 mins.

MARLENE VAN NIEKERK
Marlene van Niekerk is one of the most important and renowned writers in South Africa, and gained international attention with the novel Triomf in 1994. In Norway she is probably best known for Agaat. Meet Marlene van Niekerk in conversation with Brita Strand Rangnes from UiS.

THE PARISIAN
British Isabella Hammad debuted earlier this year with the novel The Parisian . The novel has been sold to a number of countries and will be out in Norwegian this fall. The Parisian bears similarities with Hammad’s great grandfather’s story. Meet Hammad in conversation with journalist Karin Haugen.

GEOFF DYER  
Geoff Dyer is one of our greatest essayists. This year White Sands and Yoga for People Who Can’t Be Bothered to Do It is published in Norwegian. Dyer writes with wit and insight about his many encounters with new places. Dyer will be interviewed by journalist Ane Farsethås.

WRITING ABOUT THE SHAMEFUL – SEMINAR ON ARABIC LITERATURE 
In collaboration with Norsk oversetterforening Kapittel invite to a seminar dedicated to Arabic literature.

15:00 - 15:20: On the term «بيع » (that which is considered shameful/ improper) in Arabic literature. With Nisrin Maktabi Barkouki from Det flerspråklige bibliotek. In Norwegian.
15:25 - 16:05: Unheard! Four Arabicspeaking ICORN-writers have worked together with four Norwegian translators on the project Tekst i flukt and will read the freshly translated stories in Arabic and Norwegian. With Wesam Almadani, Ali Hayder, Samah Mahmoud and Boushra Majzoub. Translators: Eva Marie Håland,  Gunvor Mejdell and Geir Juell  Skogseth. In Arabic and Norwegian.
16.05 - 16.15 Break
16.15 - 17.00: Writing about the shameful in Arabic and Norwegian. With ICORN-writer Wesam Almadani, the Palestinian-Icelandic writer Mazen Maarouf and the Norwegian writer Monica Isakstuen. Moderator: Nisrin Maktabi Barkouki. In English.

TO TRAVEL CLEANSES THE EYES
Carsten Jensen renewed Scandinavian travel literature with I Have Seen the World Begin. Geoff Dyer gives no practical advice in his travel literature, but rewards the reader with a witty and refreshing look at the world. Jensen and Dyer is interviewed by journalist Harald Birkevold about writing travel literature.

SELFIE (2019) 
Director: Agostino Ferrente. The two 16-yearolds Alessandro and Pietro come from the rough Traiano-district in Naples. A brutal place to grow up, where the path to a life of crime and forlornness is short. The boys are given the task to depict their life in selfie-mode with each their mobile, a task they perform with warmth and humor. Italian, English subtitles. 76 mins.

COLD CASE HAMMARSKJÖLD (2019) 
Regi: Mads Brügger. In 1961, the plane with UN’s Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld mysteriously crashed with no survivors in Northern- Rhodesia (now Zambia). 50 years later it is still an unsolved mystery. English, english subtitles. 128 mins.

THE POLITICAL POWER OF LITERATURE
The South-African writer Marlene van Niekerk both touched and  provoked readers with the award- winning novel Agaat. Carsten Jensen is known for his sharp political essays, but with his latest novel The First Stone he also displays how much political power fiction can hold.  Do writers of fiction have a political responsibility? Hear Marlene van Niekerk and Carsten Jensen in conversation with journalist Mímir Kristjánsson. In collaboration with Klassekampen.

EXPERIENCING WAR
Iraqi writer Hassan Blasim, received The Independent Foreign Fiction Prize 2014 for his satirical collection of short-stories The Corpse Exhibition. Palestinian writer Mazen Maarouf has received great praise for his collection of “dark tales from strange places” in Jokes for the Gunmen. Blasim and Maarouf will be interviewed by journalist Guttorm Andreasen about Arabic short-story writing and the absurdity of war.

THE ART OF SHORT-STORIES
Gunnhild Øyehaug and Hassan Blasim are two Nordic masters of short-story writing, who both play with surrealism. Øyehaug and Blasim talk about the art of short-stories with former Kapittel festival director, Espen Røsbak.

Director: Nick Broomfield. A dive into the relationship between Leonard Cohen and his Norwegian muse Marianne Ihlen, who both passed away during the fall of 2016. English, no subtitles. 102 mins.
