Mikhail Eldin

Mikhail Eldin

Mikail Eldin is a Chechen journalist and writer. He was the cultural editor for the Chechen literary periodical Vast before taking up arms himself in the conflict with Russia. When the First Chechen War began in 1994, Eldin was a young arts journalist hunting for a story. By the time of the second Russian invasion five years later, he was a battle-scarred reporter who had survived firefights and brutal torture at the hands of Russian troops. His memoir The Sky Wept Fire is an account of his time during the war. Eldin eventually left Chechnya in fear for his life and secured political asylum in Norway, where he now lives. As a survivor, he sees it as his duty to remember those that sacrificed themselves – "and not just to remember, but to tell their story as best [he] can".
