Fatemeh Ekhtesari

Fateme Ekhtesari is an Iranian women’s rights activist, poet and writer who writes in Persian. She has won numerous awards for her writing (Jaleh Esfahani Prize 2013, Khorshid Prize 2012). She has published three collections of poetry in Iran: Feminist discussions before cooking potatoes, Crying over a box of eggs (in an underground publication), and Beside the side-track. Ekhtesari, typically explores womens issues (them gender discrimination and domestic violence). She has also made 2 short documentary films: Still and The ways. Ekhtesari formed part of the ‘Resistance at My Writing Desk’, a Swedish-Iranian literary exchange. In 2013, she after she arrived back from the poetry festival in Gothenburg, in Iran she was imprisoned and later released on bail. Her verdict came in 2015 when she was sentenced to 99 lashes and 11.5 years imprisonment for crimes against the Iranian regime, for immoral behaviour and blasphemy. Fatemeh Ekhtesari and Mehdi Mousavi fled Iran for Turkey late 2015. They are now safely settled in Lillehammer City of Refuge with the ICORN residency programme.
